About Us - Kris Crawford and Cristi Derenzi
The members of For Pets Sake have been working professionally with canines for over 30 years. We have worked in actual emergency response situations which allows us to teach the realities of acting in emergency situations. We have worked in disaster situations, emergency veterinary hospitals, done shelter work and rescue, temperament testing, obedience, behavioral training and have assisted in titling many dogs. We have worked with law enforcement and have trained and worked professional service dogs. Our lead instructor, Dr. Cristi Derenzi-Blackwolf, is a licensed veterinarian with 17 years experience in an emergency veterinary hospital. And Search and Rescue Dog Handler/For Pits Sake Founder Kris Crawford.
Classes are held the first Tuesday of every month in San Jose, CA - near Hwy 87 and Curtner Ave. If you have a club, arrangements can be made for us to come to you. Contact us for details about private first aid training at your facility.
While first aid techniques for dogs are similar to those for humans, they are not the same. Knowing the difference could mean life or death for your canine best friends.
Why choose For Pets Sake Canine 1st Aid?
- Our class is presented by individuals who have years of experience working in actual emergency response situations. Our lead instructor is a licensed veterinarian with 20 years experience in an emergency veterinary hospital. The American Red Cross and the other Pet First Aid classes out there are taught by someone who simply took a class so they could teach the class. Would you rather be taught how to save your dogs life by someone who read a book and took a class or by someone who has years of knowledge and actual hands on experience saving dogs lives?
- We offer exceptional customer service that begins with our easy registration process, and continues into a fun 2-hour class of instruction.
- For your convenience, we offer courses the first Tuesday of every month in San Jose, CA - near Hwy 87 and Curtner Ave. We offer group discounts and we can also come to your facility and train your group.
- We provide class participants with a graduation certificate and For Pets Sake Certified logo that you may proudly display on your website to promote your commitment to canine first aid & safety. We also offer discount private courses for your clients, with customized certificates with your logo, to forever remind your clients about your commitment to their dogs' safety.

There's no doubt about it, sharing your life with a dog can be expensive. Food, toys, and veterinary expenses can add up. According to the American Pet products Manufacturers Association (APPMA) Americans spent $43.4 billion on pets in 2008 — more than double what they spent a little more than a decade ago.
The For Pets Sake Canine 1st Aid class will help you to be able to keep your dog healthy and safe during this economic downturn. Veterinarians are an indispensable part of your dog’s health routine so do NOT skip the preventative annual check-up. But if you are knowledgeable in canine first aid, you will know that you do not have to go to the clinic for every minor paw wound or if your 100 pound retriever eats a couple of M&M's.
While first aid skills do not replace follow up veterinary care, you will know how to assess your dog to determine whether you need immediate emergency veterinary care (very costly) or whether you can monitor your dog until regular vet business hours. You will also learn how to take care of common injuries, like paw wounds, and save yourself a vet visit. Learning proper techniques for stabilization and transportation would reduce the risk of further injuries requiring more veterinary treatment and therefore higher fees.
Disaster Preparedness is also covered. Planning ahead is the key to keeping yourself and your pets safe if disaster strikes. Our instructors have experience working actual disasters and have seen first hand what happens when plans are not put in place if disaster strikes.

Classes are from 6:30pm to 9:00pm and are scheduled for the first Tuesday of every month in San Jose, CA near Hwy 87 and Curtner Ave,
"This is an incredibly comprehensive program and I came away with not only a wealth of practical information but, just as importantly, peace of mind knowing the steps to take should I ever need to apply canine first aid. I think it should be required education for every caring dog owner!"
